Friday the 13th

There it is again: Friday the thirteenth... Although most claim not to believe in the predicted misfortune on this day, Friday the thirteenth turns out to be the day with the most sick days and the day when people prefer to stay indoors in the first place. As a fine consequence, it is also the day with the least accidents!

Although we in the Netherlands collectively feign sobriety, observant people will notice that in the vast majority of cases the number 13 is missing from lift buttons in hotels, businesses and offices. Eleventh floor, twelfth, hey...fourteenth? The origins of all the fuss surrounding Friday the 13th lie in Christianity.

Betrayed

Jesus was crucified on a Friday, according to the Bible. At the Last Supper before his crucifixion, besides Jesus Christ, 12 disciples were present which together makes the number thirteen. The thirteenth guest at the table, nota bene, was Judas, who betrayed Jesus. So Friday is an unlucky day anyway for this reason and if it coincides with the thirteenth of the month, you should salvage yourself!

Breaking a mirror used to kill the unlucky person. Because - according to ancient wisdom - your soul is reflected in the glass. With the mirror, your soul would also break. Ouch! Later, this doom was adjusted to seven years of bad luck. Better... though it's still scary when this happens on Friday the 13th. Double bad luck!

A ladder against the wall

A ladder standing against a wall forms a triangle with the floor. A symbol of Holy Trinity. Walking underneath it shows disrespect, which will be punished! And when this happens on Friday the thirteenth, you are completely sour, it goes without saying.

Yet there are those who deliberately look for the number 13. Right on a Friday! Witches anyway. But also In the tattoo scene, for example, 13 is a lucky number. Lucky 13. It is not rare to see tattoo enthusiasts with the number 13 on their bodies.

Black cats

This is with the intention that 'The Misfortune' will recognise the number 13 in passing and assume that the person in question will get his portion bad luck has already had. Evil will pursue its path on this, looking for a possible next victim. Superstition is of all times and black cats need not be avoided.

Unless you have a white sofa...
