Infrared sauna at home, your own spiritual wellness unit

An infrared sauna at home: an absolute must. In this blog, I am happy to share my experiences with you. The moment I sat down in an infrared sauna for the first time, I knew: I want this in my home too! As staying in the infrared sauna balanced my body and mind perfectly, I can honestly describe it as the ultimate spiritual experience.

2008. Together with my friend Anouk, I visited a private spa in Alkmaar. Neither of us are really into the massive and large-scale, so a small-scale sauna where the two of us could use all the facilities was the perfect girlfriend day out for us.

Besides, I was quite nervous about the sauna. The last thing I was waiting for was a flock of naked cocksuckers. It had been years since I had last seen the inside of a sauna and the experience back then was, unfortunately, nothing to write home about.

Finnish sauna

When I was 17, the boy I was in a relationship with at the time took me on holiday to Austria. He had booked a week's winter sports at a fantastic hotel in Gerlos where I was introduced to the Finnish sauna and sunbed for the first time in my life, luxury at the time.

Still, it was only that once. Thanks in part to the obligatory ice-cold dip after the sweat, I wasn't exactly a fan. And all the bare-chested people around me didn't really make me happy either.

Not that I'm a prude, but to have to look at all sorts of swirling hanging breasts, quacks and unflattering bell-bottoms for a couple of hours at a time I personally find just a bit too much.

In doing so, I had apparently dipped a bit half-baked after the sauna session, because where my back and legs had received the full brunt from the emptied bucket, my head had been pretty much out of harm's way.

The result was a good dose of dizziness and nausea which forced me to skip the delicious dinner. An alert desk clerk who saw that I wasn't feeling well and advised me to take a cold shower in our hotel room to keep my head under the cold shower eventually put an end to this 'hangover'.

Infrared sauna

So Anouk and I, together in our bikini in the private spa. Perfect.

It became even more perfect when I took my first seat in the infrared cabin. The temperature was very pleasant: 60 degrees, very comfortable. And even better: afterwards there was a lukewarm shower and we were even allowed to take a warm bath. This was quite different from splashing ice-cold water all over yourself!

Of course, we also used the Turkish steam bath and Finnish sauna that day (because we paid for it!) and pampered ourselves extensively with a facial, a hot stone massage and a mud pack, but of all the facilities, the infrared sauna had impressed me the most. Although many people think that the effect of the Finnish sauna and the infrared sauna are similar, this is certainly not the case.

As I lay in my bed that night, tired but fulfilled, and increasingly aware of how well the infrared heat had done me in terms of much-needed relaxation, I knew for sure. I wanted my own infrared sauna at home!

It seemed really wonderful to be able to dive into the infrared cabin at any time. Without any onlookers, without other people around me, and above all without having to leave the house at all for this.

But yes. How do you do that on a limited budget in a small four-bedroom flat?

Although I expected the mission to be prohibitive and I would have to sacrifice at least an entire room for it, the opposite turned out to be true. By freeing up just one and a half square metres in my bedroom, the space problem was already solved. And the price wasn't too bad either.

Infrared sauna price

Since I have already experienced a few times that people were inspired by this story with the result that they also bought an infrared cabin themselves, I am happy to share this information with you in a blog.

Many people do not think about it, but having your own spiritual wellness unit in this form is feasible for almost anyone with an average income. Especially if you can additionally free up (at least) one square metre in your home, this source of relaxation is more within reach than you think.

In fact, a single infrared cabin is available from as little as one square metre and you can make it as expensive as you want. The cabins can be bought new from around €600.00 but you can also choose to buy luxury infrared sauna accessories additional order or aromatherapy to add. Personally, I find a ergonomic backrest very nice.

I myself bought my own sauna at the time for just €699.00. It became a double one measuring 1.30 m wide and 1.12 m deep including colour therapy. I have now had an infrared sauna at home for ten years and have not regretted it for a moment.

Sometimes I sit in it reading, sometimes meditating, sometimes listening to new age music with nature sounds and sometimes just watching television. In fact, right opposite the sauna is the smart TV: ideal!

Infrared sauna power consumption

When people hear that I have a sauna myself, I am invariably asked if it uses a lot of electricity. The answer is: no.

Most infrared saunas have 5 lamps with a total output of 3500 watts (3.5 kW). One group delivers 3680 watts (16A x 230 volts). One session lasts around 30 to 60 minutes.

A kW costs about €0.23 so per 60-minute sauna session this comes to about €0.80, comparable to an hour of ironing.

Doing one-hour sessions twice a week will cost you €83.20 a year. The infrared radiators themselves are also already durable. With daily use, they will last at least 50 years!

Healthy?

Although the beneficialness of the infrared sauna cannot be scientifically proven, it has now been proven that its use in any case NOT harmful to health.

What it does for me personally?

A session in the cabin balances the body and mind in a very pleasant and comfortable way, exactly where it is at spirituality all about.

Nevertheless, a session always does me tremendous good. Whether it's in my head or not, it doesn't do any harm. In any case, it certainly doesn't make me feel worse, on the contrary!

Do you also think that buying your own cabin can be a worthwhile investment in terms of your mental, physical and spiritual well-being, and would you like to have your own infrared sauna at your home?
